"When your child is sick, you need a plan."
When you’re the mum of a small child, you don’t really expect them to be faced with sudden, life-threatening illness. You don’t think you’re going to be told, “Your child has leukaemia.”
I heard this devastating news twice.
I knew something very serious was wrong when Kate started to run frequent high temperatures and, instead of playing, she wanted to take little naps.
I knew because Kate’s older brother James had developed the same symptoms before his second birthday, ten years prior. Our GP referred him to the specialists at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, where we heard the shocking news: James had leukaemia.
It took time, but my James did get well, and we settled back into life as a normal family again. But now, it was happening to Kate.
I’ll never forget what Professor Smith of Crumlin Hospital said next. “Yes, Noreen, it’s looking like it possibly will be leukaemia. I’ll be in with you in the morning. And we will deal with this together. We will make a plan.”
When you support CMRF Crumlin, you are providing a pillar of strength for the kind of planning that every sick child depends on.
The gift you send today will bring children like Kate one step closer towards the next medical breakthrough. I’m excited about that future, aren’t you?
With all my best wishes,
Noreen Doyle (James’ and Kate’s Mum)
