The story so far - This festival started as organiser Eleco Becker's son Josh and organiser Liam Condon's two grand-daughters all spent time as inpatients in Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin. They both felt that the wanted to give something back to the hospital as they saw the amazing staff gave the best care possible with very over stretched resources. As both were from a musical background they decided on a one day busking event to raise funds for the hospital. Due to popular demand they decided to run a festival rather than another one day event. This is now the Clonmel Busking festival. To date they have raised approx €100,000 for Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.
The Clonmel Busking festival runs for four days every August. Its main aims are to provide high quality FREE music events for Clonmel town. Busking takes place during the day in Clonmel town centre, while at night a number a concerts take place in various venues throughout the town.
The busking festival is run by a small group of people dedicated to creating a music festival in Clonmel, which in years to come will rival Ireland's biggest festivals, while also generating money and tourism for the local economy in Clonmel. All the people involved in organising the event, work on a voluntary basis.
The aim of this festival is to raise awareness for Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin with all funds donated to CMRF Crumlin, the fundraising body for the hospital.
As well as enjoying famous musicians such as John Spillane you may also witness the early beginnings of a rising star.
Festival 2016 - Thursday 4th until Sunday 7th August.
This year the festival will feature a short film and a graphic novel depicting a historical event in Clonmel history "Cromwell's Siege of Clonmel" . This is a community based project in Clonmel. Service Users from Rehab Care star in the short film after numerous drama workshops were given to them by Chakra Productions to prepare them for their roles in the film. The workshops gave all the participants more confidence in their lives.
Service Users (Mental Health Services) created the costumes used under the guidance of the Art Teacher Mia Carney. Students from the National Learning Network and two local community groups also created more costumes, facilitated by Brigid Teehan, Beehouse Arts.
As a community people, both young and old and from all walks of life came together to make this project happen, for example the Past Mayor Pat English starred in the film, local artist and film director Will Nugent and independent filmmaker Paul Kelly to name a few.
Eamon Cowan a sculptor, artist and graphic novelist produced a graphic novel from scratch and also from a different view point showing ‘Cromwell's Siege of Clonmel’. He worked very long hours and was dedicated to producing this original master piece.
